I’m back with more DIY. This time I’m coming with some lovely, natural toothpaste. Why make toothpaste when we can buy it in stores? Well because DIY is fun, it’s cheaper, and healthier. The thing is that the toothpaste we buy in stores are filled with chemicals like sulfates and fluoride. Although there are natural toothpastes out on the market they may be a bit pricier that what we wish to pay. So I’ve created an all natural toothpaste using 3 inexpensive ingredients.
What You Will Need
1/2 Teaspoon of baking soda
1/4 teaspoon of unrefined coconut or sesame oil
3-4 drops of peppermint essential oil (or see here for other essential oil choices)
A bowl or container of some sort
Spoon for combining mixture
- Combine ingredients until a paste forms
- Brush your teeth with the mixture
That’s it. Two steps. How easy was that? So why did I choose the ingredients I did?
Baking Soda: Cleans and whitens teeth
Coconut or Sesame Oil: Antibacterial oils that help to pull toxins from your mouth
Peppermint essential oil: My DIY isn’t complete until I add an essential oil. I chose peppermint because of the refreshing, minty taste. The essential oil is also an antibacterial that will help to keep your mouth fresher longer.
I love this toothpaste because it polishes my teeth so well and I feel good about using it.
I make a new batch each time I brush my teeth. I’m at the point where I eyeball the ingredient amounts. This is a preservative free mixture and if it comes in contact with water it becomes a breeding ground for bacteria. If you can make your paste and keep it away from water you may be able to make small batches ahead of time.
That’s all folks!
